An informed source told EghtesadOnline that Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, and the negotiating team accompanying him are likely to remain in New York until Wednesday.
The development comes as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian left New York for Tehran on Saturday.
Earlier reports said that technical experts from Iran joined the negotiations following the first meeting between Araghchi and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. Although the United States had initially declined to issue visas to several members of the Iranian delegation, the visas were reportedly issued shortly after the first round of talks, allowing several additional Iranian officials to join the negotiations in New York.
Iran proposed seven-day Strait of Hormuz reopening
According to the information reported by EghtesadOnline, Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz for seven days in exchange for the lifting of the naval blockade.
The Wall Street Journal has reported that U.S. President Donald Trump rejected the proposal. However, talks appear to be continuing through Qatari mediation, with issues still unresolved but signs of progress reportedly emerging.
Could further talks be held through Qatar or Oman?
If the negotiations make further progress, additional meetings between Iranian and U.S. officials could take place with mediation by Qatar or Oman.
Both countries have sought to reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington and facilitate an understanding aimed at ending the war, according to the source. For now, it remains unclear how the negotiations in New York will develop and which account of the talks will ultimately prove accurate.
