President Rouhani condoles demise of Iranian Para-cyclist

EghtesadOnline: President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday condoled the demise of Iranian Para-cyclist who died following a crash in the men's road race in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

President Rouhani said in his tweeter account that 'the death of Bahman Golbarnezhad during Rio Paralympic Games is sad news for all of us.' 

Golbarnezhad, a 48-year-old war veteran, suffered fractures to his neck after losing control on a downhill section of the course while he was competing in the men’s C4-5 road race, according to IRNA.

According to Iranian officials, Golbarnezhad also suffered a heart attack as he was being transferred to a near hospital, he later died in intensive care ward in the hospital.

His death comes one day before the Paralympic Games’s closing ceremony. 

Golbarnezhad, who had lost his left leg during the eight-year imposed war between Iran and Iraq (1980-1989), snatched 12 gold and one silver medals in different international competitions. 

He also competed in the London 2012 Paralympics.

Globarnezhad's death has shocked Iran's squad at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
